How to Become a Tow Truck Driver

Working as a tow truck driver offers a rewarding career for people from all walks of life. If you enjoy solving challenges and helping out people in need, operating a tow truck is a great way to get involved and learn a flexible skill that’s always in demand. The tow truck industry in Queensland is regulated to ensure safe and ethical practices throughout. The Government has laid out a few key requirements for getting started with your career as a tow truck driver, and we’re going to cover them in this article!

The Basics of Becoming a Tow Truck Driver

To operate a tow truck in Brisbane, you’ll need to hold either a Tow Truck Driver Certificate or Tow Truck Assistant Certificate. These allow you to work either as a tow truck driver or as an assistant to a tow truck driver.

To apply for a Tow Truck Driver Certificate, you must:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Hold a current Australian driver’s licence for the class of tow truck you want to drive
  • Have continuously held your licence for at least three years immediately before the date of the application
  • Pass  a Q-SAFE tow truck operational test
  • Have a suitable criminal and traffic history

To apply for a Tow Truck Driver Assistant Certificate, you must:

  • Be 16 years or older
  • Have a suitable criminal and traffic history

With this certificate, tow truck drivers and their assistants are allowed to operate a tow truck that attends the scene of incidents (such as crashes), tow vehicles seized by police or to remove vehicles from private property.

While you do need to hold a current certificate to drive a tow truck, you’ll only be allowed to operate under the authority of a Tow Truck Licence holder.

Obtaining a Tow Truck Licence

People who hold Tow Truck Driver or Assistant Certificates can only operate under the authority of an individual or company that holds a current Tow Truck Licence.

Tow truck licences are regulated by the Department of Transport and Main Roads to help ensure that towing companies act safely and ethically, especially when towing damaged vehicles. Obtaining a tow truck licence simply requires you to submit the correct application form to your local TMR. An application for a tow truck licence can be made either in your own name or in the name of a business.

Tow truck licence holders are required to meet several obligations. You must:

  • Provide 24/7 towing services
  • Conduct business from a property that’s owned or leased by the licence holder
  • Have a safe, approved yard for storing towed vehicles
  • Obtain government approval for the area where the holding yard is located
  • Supply suitable communication equipment at the business premises and in tow trucks

Training to Become a Tow Truck Driver

While there are no official requirements to apprentice or train as a tow truck driver in Queensland, you do need to show that you can properly and safely drive a tow truck to hold a Tow Truck Driver Certificate. In some cases, tow truck drivers or towing companies may ask their drivers to undertake additional study, training or on-the-job instruction to help them master the skills and tools they’ll need. A range of Government Certificates cover the skills and knowledge tow truck drivers use on a daily basis, including:

  • Certificate II in Driving Operations
  • Certificate III in Driving Operations
  • TLIC3035 – Manage the Operation of a Tow Truck

Aside from formal certificates, many tow truck drivers are simply trained on the job as tow truck assistants. People who hold assistant certificates are permitted to help with operating a licensed tow truck, usually with the intention that they will learn the job before upgrading to a full tow truck driver certification.
